Boise’s Look Before You Lock Campaign

Boise’s Look Before You Lock Campaign

With the weather in Boise getting warmer, the City of Boise has started its Look Before You Lock campaign, this is the fourth year for the campaign.  It’s to remind everyone that provides transportation for a  child, family member, or pet to make sure you don’t leave them in a parked car for any amount of time due to the dangers of heatstroke.

What Is Heatstroke?

Heatstroke is a life-threatening condition in which a person becomes unable to regulate their body temperature due to prolonged exposure to high temperatures. The body’s core temperature rises, and this causes sweating to stop, which can lead to dehydration and even possible death.

Heatstroke can happen to anyone, but children and pets are at higher risk because they heat up four times faster than an adult human and have a lower body temperature. Heatstroke can happen in just 10 to 15 minutes if you leave children or pets in a car. If the outdoor temperature is 75 degrees, the temperature inside a vehicle with the windows rolled up can reach 94 degrees in very little time.

Helpful Tips To Remember

Life can be quite hectic and sometimes plans change and you’re doing something new that is not part of your normal routine, such as dropping off your child at daycare or bringing your pet to doggie daycare.

Social media is full of people that will say “How do you forget your pet or child is in the back of your car”.  Unfortunately, it can happen to the best parent, guardian, or sitter but it is definitely preventable by following some of these tips.

  1. Leave something in the backseat, such as a briefcase, laptop, or even one of your shoes.
  2. Leaving your car running with a child or pet inside is dangerous from a few perspectives but even for a few minutes, you never know, your air conditioning could fail and it has happened in the past.
  3. The City of Boise has windows clings with reminders to check your back seat when you exit the vehicle.
  4. Put reminders on your smartphone to remind you of the change in your schedule and add a few follow-ups to your to-do list.
  5. A sticky note taped to the front of the steering wheel with a reminder to check the backseat.
  6. The downloadable pdf from the city of Boise to put up in your workplace is available for download.

My Air Conditioning Is Running It Will Just Be A Minute

Never consider this an option! I cannot stress this enough. Things can happen even in those few minutes.  The car could stall, run out of gas, the compressor could malfunction, the car could get stolen, you could have a medical incident inside the store or building and no one would know that you left your child or pet in your car.

If you do have issues with your vehicle’s air conditioning system and want to keep everyone safe and cool while riding in the family vehicle then Wrench and Ratchet in Garden City has you covered.

We can take care of your air conditioner in your vehicle and get you back on the road being as cool as a cucumber :). We will include a complimentary safety inspection to make sure there aren’t any other problems that might come up in the near future.  Call us at 208-345-0011 and make an appointment.
